HANNE ENEMARK &
Since studying together at the Royal College of Art over five years ago, Hanne Enemark and Louis Thompson have worked together successfully on a number of commissions and personal projects.
They have a common interestin thetension between chaos and order, fragility and strength, internal structure and external form. Their most recent collaboration, Panicumprovided an opportunity for themto crystallise these ideas through a series of large scale, elegant pieces that combinetheirstrengths and common interests as artists and makers.Theyare intrigued by how theseintricate, internal fragile structures contradict the calm skin and surfaceof the glass form that encapsulatesthis magical and energetic inner world. While makingthesepieces Hanne and Louiswere struck by how the pieces powerfully expressed theircreative intent and directly seized upon thedrama of theheat of the moment, an intuitiveand excitingdialoguebetween the material andthe action of making. They have referencedearly Venetian glassmakingtechniques by usinga special hard white glass developed by the Venetians to achieve the very fine white lines of colour used in intricate decorativepattern making.
The hardness and strength that characterisesthis white glass comes from a ceramic based material called Smalto. By using this age old glass recipe, Hanne and Louis have forgeda bond between the historical Venetian glassmaking tradition with their contemporary and playful approach to glass. This collaborative body of work hasbeen developed further duringartistic residencies they both completed at the Museum of Glassnear Seattle and the GlazenhuisMuseum in Belgium in 2015. These works have been exhibited in the UK, USA, Switzerland and Monaco and are held in Museum collections in Germany and USA.
